From Ardwick to Alderley...

Years ago I read a magazine piece with that title; two places half an hour apart by train , yet half a world away from each other in reality. There was a comparison between roads with similar names- Manchester Rd Ardwick was lined with grimy terraced shops, Manchester Rd Alderley was a rather more splendid Victorian affair. Wood St Ardwick had slum terraces, Woodbrook Rd Alderley had magnificent views across the Cheshire Plain (it's where the footballers live now), in the far distance there was an inconvenient smudge on the horizon, Manchester, where the money for the fancy houses came from.
